1. My apartment complex doesn't recycle. What can I do?

If you live in an apartment or a multi-family development where curbside recycling is not available to you, there is a large (8 yard) recycling container OUTSIDE of the corral in the Avon City Hall parking lot, located at 36080 Chester Road, specifically for your use. You may recycle the same materials that can be placed in the curbside containers. View for a list of acceptable recyclable materials (PDF). Please place the items in the bin loose (no bags) and please break down cardboard boxes.

2. What do I do with my old medication?

Secure drop off collection boxes for unwanted prescription medications and hypodermic needles are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the foyer of the Avon Police Station, located at 36145 Detroit Road.

3. Does Avon have a document shredding program for sensitive materials?

Each year, the City of Avon offers residents the opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents that you do not want to put in your refuse or recycling containers. Documents containing personal information, such as your Social Security Number, medical records, tax and banking information, etc. can be brought to the parking lot at Avon City Hall, located at 36080 Chester Road, to be safely shredded while you watch. In 2019, the Secure Document Shred Events will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 and Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 9:00 am to Noon.

4. Is there any special way to get rid of old baby things?

Many parents do not know what to do with their infant carriers and car seats once their children have outgrown them. A brand new car seat recycling program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital gives parents an opportunity to help the environment, and perhaps assist some needy parents.

Used car seats turned into the recycling program are inspected and evaluated for potential future use. Those that are safe to be reused are cleaned and offered to those without the means to purchase a new car seat. Seats that cannot be reused are dismantled and recycled—keeping them out of landfills.

5. How do I get rid of Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)

6. What should I do with household hazardous waste, like paint and pesticides?

Click HERE for a list of acceptable items at the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District Collection Center located at 540 S. Abbe Rd., Elyria. 440-329-5440. The hours of operation are: Monday - Noon to 4pm, Wednesday - Noon to 6pm and Saturday - 9am to 3 pm. You MUST show proof of residency in Lorain County.
